Rajastan Desert
14 februari 2012Leaving Delhi for a bumpy ride to Pushkar and into the old kingdom of Rajastan. The holy city covered with 500 temples. A few days where spent there before we left to Jaisalmer. A city only 100 km from the border to Pakistan.
Here are some pictures from Pushkar and Jaisalmer and it surroundings.
Delhi
6 februari 2012After being the rear bumper for a rickshaw (bike taxi) in very hectic traffic with horning cars, auto rickshaws, yelling bikers and cows I now feel pretty safe riding inside one. When I first arrived to Delhi and took the first ride with a rickshaw I felt a bit scared since the traffic is like the opposite of Sweden. But after a while I started to notice that there is some sort of pattern in the total chaos that covers the city.
As long as we stayed on the touristic paths everyone asked us to buy something from their shop. But if we instead walked away from those streets and into the valleys we started to be the persons of interest the further away we got. People started to ask us if they could take a picture of us with us in it and kids looked at us and laughed.
You cant’ call it a proper visit to Delhi if you don’t visit some of the most known places. One of the most amazing sights was Humayun’s Tomb. We truly choose the right time of day to visit it. Early in the morning before all other tourists and school classes who arrived when we left. Just outside the entrance to the building we started talking to a man cleaning the areas around it. He gave us a small private tour of Humayun’s Tomb and that was his way of earning some extra money.
Another thing that is needed to experience is the bazaars spread all over the city. Vegetables, spices and fruits are piled up in small mountains. Endless rows of books. And all other things you could need, or want.
One seller started to shouting after me;
Photograph! Photographer, here!
I turned around there was two men sitting close to a wall selling jeans. They didn’t want me to buy anything, they just wanted me to take a picture of them. It turned out that they didn’t speak English and wanted me to teach them. Really hard to do that in a crowded marketplace without being stepped on.
The sight from the roof of our hotel at night is hard to match. Especially with fireworks spread over the city. I don’t know for what reason, but it was a good sight.
